How to Set Up Google 2-Step Verification

Sign into your Google Account.

Click this link to Manage Your Google Account: https://myaccount.google.com/ or click on your icon/picture in the top right corner.

Then click the security tab on the left side.  Enter your password again.

Under “Signing in to Google,” select 2-Step Verification then “Get started.”

Enter your password again.

Select your primary 2-Step option from the following options. If you choose to use a security key it will always be your first option so only select the key option if you never intend to use your phone. Keys may also not work on all devices. You always have the option to skip your primary method for a backup method and you can change your settings at any time.  

Google Prompt - Don’t enter a code!
We recommend you use Google prompts as your second step. They’re easier to enter than a verification code and can help protect against SIM swap and other phone number-based hacks.

To get Google prompts, you need:
An Android phone that’s signed in to your Google Account OR
An iPhone with the Gmail app  or Google app  signed in to your Google Account.

Based on the device and location info in the notification, you can:
Tap Yes to allow sign-in OR
Tap No to block sign-in.

Text/Phone Call
A 6-digit code will be sent to your phone. Codes can be sent in a text message (SMS) or through a voice call, depending on the setting you chose. To verify it’s you, enter the code on the sign-in screen.

USB security key
A physical security key is a small device to help prove it’s you signing in. You can simply connect the key to your phone, tablet, or computer. Not all keys are compatible with all devices.

You may also be able to use the security key built in to a compatible phone to sign in to new devices.

Follow the on-screen steps to complete your selection

You can set up other verification methods in case you:

• Want increased protection against phishing
• Can’t get Google prompts
• Lose/forget your phone

Google Authenticator App
The free Google Authenticator app for Android, iPhone, or BlackBerry can generate verification codes. It even works when your device has no phone or data connectivity. While you do need to sign into your D207 Google account, email and other data will not be synced to your phone. You will need to download and install the app when you set Google Authenticator up as a backup method. The app can also be used for other accounts you might want to secure using 2 factor authentication.

Get codes via text message or a phone call

Backup codes
You can print or download one-time use backup codes for times when your phones are unavailable, such as when you travel.

Keep sign-in simple:
During sign-in, you can choose “remember this device” so you do not have to use 2-Step Verification again on that particular computer. From then on, that computer will only ask for your password when you sign in.
